What is the purpose of the Goodson Plastigage Green Bearing Clearance Measuring Tool?

The Goodson Plastigage Green is designed to measure bearing clearances in engines and other machinery. It provides an accurate way to assess the gap between bearings and their respective housing, which is crucial for ensuring optimal performance. This tool is particularly useful for engine rebuilds or maintenance tasks, allowing mechanics to confirm that tolerances are within specification. When you need to ensure that your engine operates smoothly and efficiently, utilizing this measuring tool can prevent premature wear or failure.

How does the Goodson Plastigage work?

The Plastigage works by placing a thin strip of the gauge between the bearing and its housing. Once the assembly is torqued to specifications, you can measure the width of the flattened gauge to determine the bearing clearance. Each width correlates to a specific measurement in thousandths of an inch. This straightforward method allows for quick checks without needing intricate electronic tools, making it ideal for both professional mechanics and DIY enthusiasts looking to validate clearances during builds or repairs.

What is the clearance range of the Goodson Plastigage Green?

The Goodson Plastigage Green has a clearance measurement range of .001 to .003 inches. This wide range makes it suitable for a variety of applications, including different types of engines and machinery. Accurate measurements within this narrow window are essential for proper lubrication and mechanical function. Whether you're working on classic vehicles, high-performance engines, or everyday machinery, having the right clearance ensures that components operate within safe limits and reduces the risk of failure.

Is the Goodson Plastigage reusable?

No, the Goodson Plastigage is designed for single use. Each piece of plastigage is made to provide a precise measurement by flattening upon use, which means it cannot be reused once it has been compressed. This characteristic ensures that you get an accurate reading every time you measure. While it might seem less efficient, using fresh plastigage is crucial for reliable results, especially during critical measurements in engine builds or overhauls where precision is of the utmost importance.

How many pieces are included in a pack of Goodson Plastigage?

A pack of Goodson Plastigage includes 10 individual strips. This quantity is designed to accommodate multiple measurements during an engine rebuild or repair process, allowing you to check various clearances without needing to purchase additional packs. Having enough strips on hand is advantageous during projects that involve changing multiple bearings. With 10 strips, you can efficiently measure numerous components to ensure everything is within spec, thus enhancing the reliability of the mechanical assembly.

What types of engines is the Goodson Plastigage suitable for?

The Goodson Plastigage can be used for a wide range of engine types, including both automotive and motorcycle engines, as well as light industrial machinery. It's particularly helpful when working on internal combustion engines where precision in bearing tolerance is critical for performance. Whether you are restoring a classic car, building a performance engine, or conducting regular maintenance on everyday vehicles, this tool helps ensure that each bearing is fitted correctly to support smooth operation and longevity.

Can the Goodson Plastigage be used for other measurements apart from bearing clearances?

While the primary use of Goodson Plastigage is for bearing clearance measurements, it can also be utilized in other applications where precise gap measurements are required. This includes checking the fitment of certain machined components such as piston rings or valve guides, particularly when assessing tolerances that rely on consistent clearances. Its versatility makes it a valuable tool in workshops where an understanding of mechanical tolerances is necessary to maintain the health of various machine elements.

What advantages does the Goodson Plastigage offer over digital measuring tools?

The Goodson Plastigage offers several advantages over digital measuring tools, such as ease of use, affordability, and immediate visual feedback. Since it requires no batteries or calibration, it can be conveniently used in any environment, including those without electricity. Additionally, the simplicity of reading the width after compression eliminates the potential for human error found in electronic devices. This makes it an ideal choice for mechanics and DIY enthusiasts who appreciate straightforward, practical tools that deliver reliable results.
